The problem

The derelict remains of a lead smelter with around 8,500 tons of toxins, is located in Chilpancingo. An American-owned company named Metales y Derivados operated here for more than a decade recycling batteries until the Mexican government shut it down in 1994 for gross violation of pollution regulations.

Health Impact

Skin rashes, nosebleeds and hair loss are common ailments in this town. A local physician says he constantly sees patients with suspicious diseases ranging from chronic rashes to cancers to fatal birth defects.

Over ninety percent of the children in Chilpancingo have tested positive for elevated levels of lead in their blood. An abnormally high number of them suffer from birth defects.
