Pali Dyeing Industries

The problemPali is an important textile center in Rajasthan and has been identified as one of the most polluted cities in the country. There are around 989 dyeing and printing units, most of which directly discharge their untreated effluents into the River Bandi. The river, which is mostly dry, is extremely polluted. In a 2004 survey of pollution in Pali, the Central Groundwater Board found that pollution had seeped into the groundwater and contaminated wells in the region.
Health ImpactMost of the dyes used by the textile industries are known carcinogens. Kidney, urinary bladder and liver cancer have been reported in dye workers. Skin diseases are common. General types of health problems linked to the dyeing industry also include:
